If you’ve ever been to a varsity Field Hockey game, then you know senior Alexis Campbell. She plays center back, a defense position which prevents the other team from scoring.  Campbell goes above and beyond what’s expected of her on the field.

Like other athletes, Campbell has a story to tell on how her love of the game began; “my teammates told me about field hockey the spring of my sophomore year. I totally didn’t know field hockey was offered at Wakefield until then.” Thus the start of her Field Hockey career was born.

Lacrosse and Field Hockey are similar sports; Campbell clears up this confusion. “In lacrosse, you use a stick and you throw it and there’s more rules and restrictions on contact.” In Field Hockey, you dribble the ball instead of throwing it.

Field Hockey is a contact sport; Campbell has experienced some terrible injuries and excruciating pain throughout her time as a center back. She said, “right now I have a possible concussion, and last year I had a sprained wrist and shin splints. I have to bare it while still doing practice and games.”

When asked what the best part of the game was, she said, “[I feel like a leader] towards the younger players. I give advice and help them become stronger team members.” Her teammates agree, even though she isn’t a captain.

When asked how she felt about her teammates, Campbell pushed her glasses up on her nose, smiled, and said, “my team, especially the defense players, encourage me when I feel like giving up.”
