A Check in on Wakefield Volleyball

September 29, 2017

The start of the season has been decent, but there is definitely room for improvement. Our girls are 3-5 right now and are hoping to continue to win and improve their record. The team is extremely close knit and really likes having fun. All of the players keep good attitudes and don’t get frustrated under pressure.

All of the players are just really happy to play volleyball. They have a small team of 11 players and all have known each other for a long time. Junior Araiya Mitchell said, “we laugh a lot and we get along really well.” The team has executed some really nice plays to win games. Sophomore Grace Bryant said, “we encourage each other and don’t get mad at each other.”

The seniors on the team have provided the leadership to help the team excel and win; senior Sophia Polisar said of a hard hit ball, “it was really a perfect pass and we were able to set it and score a point.” These kinds of plays show how good the volleyball team can be if they execute the plays and work as a team.

Many of the players are taking multiple AP classes and it is very difficult for the players to balance their school life with volleyball and their social life. Senior Devin Finlay said, “being a student athlete is probably the most difficult thing.” Many of the volleyball players stressed having a good connection with your teachers will help keep the balance. They also suggested taking AP consult as a place to get work done.

Some may not be aware of how to play on the volleyball court. The varsity volley team plays 5 sets of 25, and JV and Freshman play 3 sets of 25. The player who plays center is like the quarterback of the team. The Libero is the best passer on the team and wears a different color. Come support them at the Senior night game against TJ on the 24th of October at 7:15!!
