Wakefield’s African American Read In was on February 21st, the same day as the first Walkout, a week after the Parkland shooting. To have four poets of such caliber as Joseph Green, Rodney Johnson, Asha Gardner, and Lauren May in Wakefield’s library was a blessing. It was fitting to have these artists visit on a day where students were finding their voice, standing up and walking out for a cause, and realizing that their voices matter.

Youth Programs Coordinator for Split This Rock, Joseph Green has said of young poets that youth, “quickly come to the realization that there are many people willing to listen if they just have the audacity to speak.”

The Walkout was at noon, during B Lunch. There were about 50 students at the A Lunch performance, and rather than decrease after the Walkout, the buzz around the school made the C Lunch performance numbers at more than capacity with students standing behind bookshelves to watch the artists perform. If you couldn’t attend, watch the video for a highlight of the performances and a really good Q & A session afterwards.
