On Saturday, December 10th, Wakefield’s It’s Academic team went to the NBC 4 Studios in Washington, D.C. to compete with 2 other schools on actual television!

The members of the team who competed were Elma Shisher, Jake Karton, and Eli Posner.

On the way to the studios, Eli Posner says he was “expecting to win” and “feeling confident.” Elma Shisher describes herself as “nervous, but excited.”

Afterwards, The Wakefield Chieftain asked the contestants about the show. Jake Karton said, “it was really cool to see the behind the scenes of the show” and to get an “insight of what actually happens on a TV show.” Elma Shisher said, “I feel I could have done better, but I’m proud of what we did.” She also says “it was a lot of fun, and a great learning experience.” Eli Posner said, “it was a good experience and I enjoyed it a lot.” Similar to Shisher, Posner said, “I’m just proud of what we did.”

Mr. Stewart, Wakefield English teacher and It’s Academic leader, said he was “very impressed” and they had an “excellent” performance. When asked if he had anything to say to the team, Mr. Stewart responded with, “I’m really happy and proud to work with [them] this year.”

Quite a few of the Wakefield cheerleaders came along. It was important for them to be there, “to show support for not only the athletic teams, but also the academic team” said Assistant Cheerleading Coach Unika Dabney. (Who is also Wakefield alumni.)

Wakefield junior and Chieftain staff writer Hunter Zlotnick was on the bus with the team and said, “the best part about the show was definitely being able to cheer on the team from the bleachers.” Jake Karton said his most memorable moment from that Saturday was when he “didn’t need to buzz in, but kept buzzing in” anyway. He also said of being on the It’s Academic team, “being around people who are so diverse in their knowledge is cool to have that variety of ideas.”

It doesn’t stop there! It’s Academic has another competition THIS SATURDAY! They play at Edison in a conference match to see who really is the most academic.

Tune into NBC 4 on February 25th at 10:30am to see our team in action!
