I couldn’t move my legs as I watched a man absorb the shadowy figures into his dark, infinite cape. There were no words for the horror, the amazement, or the shock I was feeling. I wanted to run, but the strength wasn’t there, powerless against the otherworldly beings duking it out before me. It’s like the world knew that someone more powerful had entered the fray, since even nature had started to act strangely before him.

He took a step in front of me and with no hesitation, he grabbed his cloak, making the nightmarish beings disappear into the vastness that was his cloak. His cloak looked more vast than space, and there even seemed to some stars in there too. I was afraid to stare for too long, scared I would fall into the cloak, too.

He looked back at me and instantly the whole word evaporated around me. It all happened so fast that I had no time to process what was happening before me. So many questions swirled in my head, but the words didn’t seem to form, probably because of how terrified I was. I was floating in what seemed like emptiness, it felt like absolutely nothing existed here, no gravity, no life, just emptiness. The stars scattered across the whole area seemed so surreal, just placed there for light, as if they were lamps in a house.

“Girl, we must discuss, there is no time for dawdling.”

In an instant, my mind seemed to snap back into reality.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“I am the Void, but who I am is unimportant, what is important is your well being for the meantime.”

“Usually, the death of a mortal would matter little in these sort of dealings, but for some reason the souls of those attacked are gone, which means that there is no soul for us to question past your death” he said.

“How am I supposed to protect myself from those things when I’m just human?” I asked.

He looked puzzled for a second. He must have forgotten I was just a teenage girl with no awesome powers to speak of. He looked around for a few minutes, floating in the vast space of the area, when, I guess, an idea popped into his head. He started to shape something out of thin air, which looked impossible, but he was doing it anyways. It looked like some sort of bag filled with something.

“Here mortal, this will keep you safe” he said.

I grabbed the bag and opened it. Inside were very colorful rocks of some sort. There was a purplish glow inside the translucent pebbles that looked kinda like the space I was in.

“What are these?” I asked.

“These are what I call void crystals. Whenever you are in trouble, throw one at the foe and it should start working.”

I closed the bag again and stuffed it in my backpack, which miraculously had stayed intact through the fight that had occurred earlier. I closed my backpack and put the bag back on.

“Now mortal, unfortunately, I don’t have many answers for you but you do have answers for me.”

“I do?” I asked.

“Yes, you do, it involves what you saw earlier. I need to know more and I have a feeling you know more.”

“It might take some time.” I said.

“Don’t worry, Time is my younger brother, I’m sure he’ll understand.”

I might have laughed if I wasn’t so confused at the whole scenario.

I didn’t know where to start, but the beginning was always a good idea. I breathed in, and started to talk.
