The Washington Capitals: 1st in Metropolitan Division
January 24, 2017
The Washington Capitals are leading the Metropolitan Divison! Currently the Capitals have a record of 30 wins, 9 losses and 6 ties. The Caps came into the new year with a desire to win, holding on to their 9 game winning streak! Left wing Alexander Ovechkin, selected first overall by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Draft, has played a big role in each of these games. At this point in the season, he leads the team with 21 goals. According to NHL.com, although Ovechkin has a very accurate and strong shot he says, “my weapon isn’t my shot. It’s me.”
Less than a week ago while on the road, Washington lost to Pittsburgh in an intense overtime win. The Capitals scored 2 goals in the first quarter while holding the Penguins to 0. However, Pittsburgh scored 6 goals in the 2nd quarter making the score 6-3. At the end of the 3rd quarter it’s safe to say fans were anticipating a big finish to this tied game. Unfortunately, the Caps backup goalie, Philipp Grubauer, missed the puck as it went flying into the goal.
Just days after this big upset the Capitals took the ice again against the St. Louis Blues and were able to redeem themselves. Teamwork helped Washington with their 7-3 victory over St. Louis. One thing that really stood out in this game was that 7 different players scored for the Capitals, menaing it really was a team effort. Capitals Forward Marcus Johansson said, “it’s always fun to score, see a lot of other guys score too. It’s good for the team, good for the confidence.”
With plenty of games left in their season and plenty of time until playoffs begin, the Capitals need to keep their energy up and continue to play hard. Last year the Capitals were a strong favorite to win but unfortunately their season came to an end with a second-round playoff loss. Coach Barry Trotz said, “Prepearation is important to playoff success.” With that said, it’s redemption time, boys!
