Wakefield Varsity Baseball Season Recap on the Road to Regionals!
Wakefield Varsity Baseball was off to a questionable start with many wins and losses. No one could have predicted the outcome of this season. After pulling it together and getting the wins they need, they have placed second in the conference with a record of 10-9. This record has secured their spot in the Regional Playoffs; only the top three teams in the conference get in. .
10 games in, they were pretty even; winning games and coming up just short of the victory in their losses with a record of 5-5.
Here’s a recap of the games that have gotten the Warriors to where they are now.
Victory over Stuart, 4/17
Wakefield fought hard and defeated Stuart 4-3 in a conference game to end our 4-game losing streak.
Win over Falls Church, 4/24
The Boys came out ready to win. Honorable mention to Jonathan Parker on his first home run of the season and being the only one on the team to hit a home run. Final score of 9-3, Wakefield was on top in this conference game.
Intense Loss against W-L, 4/26
Coming off of two wins in a row, the boys were ready to continue the streak with a win. Phenomenal pitching from freshmen Sean Iredell and Landon Thomas made it possible to stay in the game. Wakefield played great on both sides of the ball only down a few runs going into the 6th, and pushed through and tie it up 4-4.
Starting the 7th inning, Sophomore Max Lane got on base with a walk then stole second. Sophomore Cason Poythress hit one down the third baseline scoring Max and giving Wakefield the go ahead run 5-4. Washington and Lee rallied with several perfectly placed hits and 2-run single to walk it off in the bottom of the 8th. The warriors lost 6-5 in the non conference match-up.
Win over Lee, 4/27
Wakefield coming off of a hard loss to W-L and were not willing to let that happen again. They rallied early in the game and never let up winning 13-3 in the conference game.
Win over St. Anselms, 5/2
The team put together a few clutch hits mixed with good defense to get the victory over St. Anselms in a non conference match-up. The team was lead by a fantastic performance from senior Jonathan Parker hitting his second homer of the season and leading the team in home runs.
Win over Edison, 5/3
After losing to Edison early in the season, the boys were ready for a rematch against the Edison Eagles. With great pitching from junior Zachary Bako they put together a nice win getting up early and securing the win 8-5 in the conference game.
Win over Falls Church, 5/9
The Warriors defeated the Jaguars 11-6 in the conference match-up.
Win over Lee, 5/11
The boys pieced together a nice win over Lee 9-4 . This win ended Lee’s season and started Wakefield off well in the first post season game.
Loss to Edison, 5/15
Wakefield came out ready for Edison. The team played excellent defense but couldn’t put together enough hits to get the win. Edison had the lead 1-0. Going into the fifth, it was anyone’s game, but the Eagles put the bat on the ball and scored some more runs. Wakefield lost 4-1 in the playoff game to end their run for the conference championship.
Edison and Marshall faced off in the conference championship. Marshall won with a final score of 16-0.
Road to Regionals
The Warriors couldn’t get the win they needed to take them to the Conference championship, but their season did not end there. The Warriors placed second in the conference, so they received a guaranteed spot in Regionals. The boys are not going to waste this opportunity. They continue practicing hard and getting in the reps they need to prepare themselves for the first round of Regionals. The team they will face off against Potomac Falls on Tuesday 5/29 at 6pm.
