Varsity Football had a shaky start to the 2019 season. The Fairfax Rebels beat our boys on their turf, and the first home game of the season vs. the  Yorktown Patriots was a shut out 2 weeks ago. Then, it was Friday September 20th and our boys had to play Washington-Liberty on their field. Everyone knew we had beat them before, but would we beat them again? It had been a hot and confusing start to the school year. Everyone NEEDED this win against W-L.

The Superfans were READY on Friday night. They picked Space Out as the theme, purchased glow sticks and alien antenna headbands for all who showed up, and cheered the whole night. The Marching Band and the cheerleaders were on point. They kept the crowd motivated the whole night. On Thursday, 9/19 both the JV and Freshmen teams faced off against the Washington-Liberty Generals at home and secured the wins. JV had a final score of 14-13, and freshmen finished with a final score of 14-0. The stage was set. Would our boys win?

Our Superfans are out of this world.

Our boys played an amazing game against the W-L Generals last Friday. The Warriors jumped ahead early in the game taking a lead of 7-0 over the Generals with a phenomenal run from junior running back Dontae Clark. He said, “Coach put me in the game to run in the touchdown from the two yard-line, I scored and put the first points on the board.”

The Warriors offense slightly stalled in the third quarter which allowed the Generals to cut the score to 13-10 with the 4th quarter left to play. The Generals scored in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter taking the lead from Wakefield, 17-13.

Our Warriors had just under a minute to drive 86 yards down the field and score to win the game. With a great run from Dontae Clark and a few deep passes from Senior Quarterback Cason Poythress. They found themselves on the 20-yard line with 9 seconds left to go.

They had one chance to score.

Junior wide receiver Lukai Hatcher ran a fade down the field and caught a pass deep in the corner giving Wakefield the lead 19-17 with a few seconds left to play. Hatcher said, ” I knew the ball was coming to me before the play even started; once it was in the air, I knew I had to make the catch and win the game.”

After this exceptional performance by the Wakefield Warriors, Quarterback Cason Poythress was voted Player of the Week in Virginia by the Washington Post. FOOTBALL IS SWAG!

The team has lots of eyes on them this week to perform at a high level because of the hype received from last week’s come-back. Our Warriors are 1-2, hoping to be even at 2-2 after tonight’s game at McLean at 7pm.

Come out and support! #WarriorNation
