A Dream
He said
he had a dream,
It seems
like that’s all it was.
See,
a dream for all Blacks and Whites to be equal,
to be
able to see beyond skin.
To be
able to walk the streets at night and not be
worried
about being raped or killed.
He had
a dream that little black girls could grow up
without
their hair being played with or treated like an animal.
See I
too have that dream.
That
one day I won’t have to ask myself,
Is this
cop going to shoot me today?
Is this
the day that I die?
Or will
my White Mother in her car save me?
I have
a dream that I won’t be followed around in a
store
being
accused of lying and stealing,
when
all I wanted was something to drink.
This
dream’s becoming a nightmare
Blood
filling the streets
Hate
slurs spreading through the air.
With
the false impression of FREEDOM,
with
people locked up in cages like animals and a
hate
act as a law towards gays and trans
where
showing your love and affection gets you KILLED.
Maybe
all it was, was just A Dream.
