October is here, and so are the video games that haunt your PC! Do you love that tense feeling you get when viewing a scary movie? Try to play some of these games, as that feeling seems to be amplified whilst seeing it from the close up perspective of those characters.
The first game on this list is Dead Space! This Sci-fi horror game sees you take the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent to repair a huge mining ship, the USG Ishimura. But on his arrival he finds that the ship’s crew has been slaughtered and his girlfriend Nicole is lost somewhere on the ship. The game involves a bit of shooting alien zombies, with a lot of incredibly tense exploration of the ship. It is $59.99 on Steam.
The next game is Dying Light. This game has you take the role of undercover agent Kyle Crane as he is tasked with infiltrating a quarantine zone in the (fictional) city of Harran. Turns out though that it was quarantined for a reason(who knew!), and now you have to find a way to accomplish your mission and escape the quarantine before it is too late. The game’s big draw is its advanced parkour system, allowing you to traverse the city at breathtaking speeds, while also having an amazing melee combat experience. The game is $29.99 on Steam.
The third game on the list is Resident Evil Village. This survival horror fps continues the action packed misfortunes of Ethan Winters. This time his wife is murdered and his daughter is kidnapped before he is knocked out, waking up in the aftermath of a car accident and making his way to an old little village. This game is a survival horror fps, and mixes the two genres extremely well. The game has plenty of genuinely frightening jumpscares, and amazing boss fights that make you think tactically about how to win. The game is $39.99 on Steam.
This fourth game is Dredge, a smaller game, but with an even better spooky vibe, rather than outright horror. You play as a fisherman who traveled to the coastal village of Greater Marrow, following up on a job offer to be the town’s local angler. After your boat gets shipwrecked, you are loaned a boat you have to pay back. The job is seemingly simple, catch fish and then sell them to pay the loan, and buy ship upgrades, but you’ll quickly realize that lovecraftian horrors lurk in the night at Greater Marrow. The game is $24.99 on Steam.
Another horror game is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a three versus four asymmetrical horror game based on the film of the same name. In this game you play as a victim or as a member of the family. There are five different victim characters each with their own abilities, like Leland who can charge into a family member stunning them. Victims must work together to hide and escape from the farm of the deranged family members. On the other hand there are five different family members each with their own abilities, like Leatherface who uses his chainsaw to maim victims. The family must work together to take out all four victims. The game is $39.99 on Steam.
The final game on this list is Outlast, a psychological survival horror game where you play as investigative journalist Miles Upshur, who went to investigate the newly reopened Mount Massive asylum when given a tip from an anonymous source to check it out. What he discovers when he arrives walks the line between science, religion, nature, and something else completely. Now his only hope of escape lies in the horrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive. The gameplay is completely one of stealth with a little bit of platforming , but also features an incredibly frightening feature, the asylum’s terrifying residents will randomly appear and begin chasing you. The game is $19.99 on Steam.
