5 Ways to be Kind for World Kindness Week
World Kindness Day was on Monday, November 13th. This day celebrates all the different ways we can be kind to each other. But just because the day has passed doesn’t mean it’s over: The day is being celebrated all week!
Being kind has benefits such as decreasing stress and pain, and even slowing aging (according to School of Kindness and Emily Crawford from SelectHealth). Here’s how you and your fellow Warriors can be kinder this week:
1: Take care of yourself.
Here is an important question: How can you be kind to others if you can’t be kind to yourself? According to Matthew Glowiak from Southern New Hampshire University (What is Self-Care and Why is it Important For You?), self-care decreases anger and stress, and increases happiness, making it much easier to be kind to others! Try practicing some self-care by eating your favorite food, taking some time to do something you like, or even affirming yourself in the mirror. The small things count!
2: Acknowledge others!
The easiest thing you can do to be kind to others is to show that you see them! Ask how your classmate is doing, say hello to your family when you enter your home, text an old friend to catch up, or smile at people if you’re not the talking type. Though miniscule, expressions like this can make someone feel understood and loved!
3: Volunteer for an event/organization.
If you’re one to go out and do things, volunteering is a great way to be kind this week. Some organizations thrive from community contribution! Look at websites like VolunteerMatch to find events near you, or ask around Wakefield if any school clubs/organizations need assistance!
4: Give someone a gift.
Giving someone something is a great way to be kind: It shows that you are thinking of someone. You can buy treats or even make a gift from scratch! You can find ideas on Pinterest and other social media boards for baking, crafts, or popular gifts from stores to give you ideas.
5: Donate/share your belongings.
If you have things you don’t use anymore, donating ensures that they’ll be given to someone who wants them. You can donate belongings to local churches or thrift stores, and check if there are any donation events at Wakefield (like the Interact Toy Drive)! Donating blood also helps: Wakefield’s Red Cross Club held their annual Blood Drive at the beginning of the month, so go to www.redcrossblood.org for places to donate now. You have to be 17 or older to donate blood.
This week is a great way to get out there and interact with the community, or to just take care of yourself. And of course, make sure to try to practice kindness every week!
