For the first time in school history both of the Boys and Girls track squads won the Liberty District Championship last month. The boys team won by a landslide, scoring 138 points and beating 2nd place McLean who only scored 95 points. The girls team edged out Langley and outscored them 120 to 113. There were multiple school records that went down and many regional and state qualifiers from this meet.
Starting off with the boys team, Chris Gilpin ‘26 and Thuyon Smith ‘24 placed first and third in the 55m dash while running a 6.56 and a 6.76 and also advancing to regionals. In the 500m dash, Owen Jacques ‘24 and Silas Lesperance ‘24 both made regionals and ran a 1:09.15 and 1:09.75 to place first and third as well. In the 3200m run, Noah Gunville ‘26 ran an astonishing 9:57.33 to make regionals placing 5th while running a massive PR. Alex Epstein ‘25 made regionals by placing 4th in the 55m hurdles running a speedy 8.38. In High Jump, Wakefield swept all the scoring positions to score 31 points in one event over every other school! Ben Chapuis ‘25 took home a third place finish in the Long Jump and Michael Mutchinson ‘24 set a new school record and made states in the Shot Put throwing a whopping 49-03.50.
The Boys 4x200m relay team with Chris Gilpin, Thuyon Smith, Silas Lesperance, and Owen Jacques started off day 2 with a bang by setting a new school record and taking home a dub by narrowly beating Marshall in a 1:32.48. In Pole Vault, Alex Epstein who had a 15 inch PR, Jackson Gray and Diego Fernandez all placed in the top six and made Regionals! In Triple Jump, Ben Chapuis got another 10 points and Frank Mani ‘24 had a three foot personal record to get a mark of 40-07.5 and place third making Regionals. In the 1000m run, Logan Ward ran a 9 second PR to place second and make regionals in a 2:40.09. And with the last event of the day, the 4x400m run was again another Wakefield event win. Ben Chapuis, Thuyon Smith, Silas Lesperance, and Owen Jacques ran it in 3:31.72 to set another school record and cap off an amazing District Championship performance that will never be forgotten.
The girls team had a day 1 that set them up to win; the 4×800 team with Eulalia Sarli ‘26, AJ Jordan ‘26, Quincy Daigle ‘25, and Addy Young ‘24 started off day 1 with a bang, winning the first event of the meet with a time of 9:48.17. Kenedy Shields ‘24 won the High Jump competition in a jump off against McLean clearing 5 ‘3. Hosanna Connor ‘25 and Grace Armitage ‘25 placed 2nd and 4th which advanced them both to regionals. AJ Jordan placed 5th in the 500m dash to add another event she competed in at regionals. In Long Jump, Hosanna Connor, Sofia Vazquez ‘24 and Grace Armitage placed 2nd, 4th and 5th to score and make regionals.
On the second day of competition, Hosanna Connor, Grace Armitage, and Sofia Vazquez all placed inside the top six going first, second and sixth to add more events they competed in at regionals and in Pole Vault it was Hosanna Connor and Sofia Vazquez placed first and fourth place. The 4x200m relay with Maddie Wearing ‘26, Kennedy McClary ‘25, Grace Armitage and Kenedy Shields narrowly beat Langley to win in 1:47.84 and set a new school record! Addy Young placed fourth in the 1600m run with a 5:21.47 and sixth in the 1000m run just behind Quincy Daigle who ran 3:08.82. Grace Armitage took home a podium in the 300m dash finishing second and Kenedy Shields finished sixth. And finally, Maddie Wearing, AJ Jordan, Eulalia Sarli, and Quincy Daigle put the exclamation mark on a historic day at districts by winning the 4x400m relay by six seconds and setting a new school record!
