Across the world, May is recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islanders Month. Among other things, AAPIM is a way to celebrate and appreciate various cultures from over 55+ countries represented this month. From the Polynesian islands to mainland Asia, there are so many cultures that are given a chance to shine. So in this article, I’ll be talking about some great ways to celebrate AAPIM.
When talking about any culture, food is often the most identifying aspect of one’s culture. In this case, Asian and Pacific Islander cuisine does not disappoint. While we are all accustomed to dishes from popular countries such as China, Japan, or Korea, it’s important to branch out now and then to gain new insights and experiences with different cultures. So next time you want to try something new for your taste pallet, try foods from Samoa, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
Moving on, entertainment and pop culture are another key part of Asian and Pacific islander culture. Media has only grown in fame in recent years through the lens of movies. Films such as Parasite, and Everything Everywhere All at Once have shocked the film industry, winning multiple awards in the past years. If movies aren’t your thing, try your hand at some other activities such as different art styles. Quilting, weaving, and wood carving are amongst popular art forms in many Pacific Islander nations such as Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Other art forms include traditional dances such as the Hula or the Ori Tahiti. Mixing these activities with cultural music, which is widely different from modern music, can help create fun experiences, along with immersing yourself in cultural traditions and activities.
Finally, attempting to learn a new language or dialect can be very challenging and lengthy, but the result could prove to be very rewarding.
These are only a few ways I suggest celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month. But don’t just listen to me, find your own unique ways to recognize and appreciate all of the countries and cultures represented in May. Most importantly, make sure to not only celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander culture this month, but all year round!
