No one could deny the ultimate theme of the Grammys this year was fun. Though the ceremony was partially a fundraiser for people affected by the California wildfires, the high-energy performances and feel-good narratives (Beyoncé finally winning Album of the Year! Chappelle Roan and Sabrina Carpenter officially making it!) dominated the night.
Nothing demonstrated this theme better than the red carpet.
Best vintage-Chapelle Roan
It’s not a shock one of the most exciting artists of this year also had one of the most exciting outfits. The dress is a vintage Gaultier from a 2003 spring couture showing. Her skirt was printed with Degas’ signature ballerinas, complemented by sunny yellow and a light teal. Of course the drag-inspired artist accessorized with a fully beat, as well as a headpiece and sheer gloves.
Most silly-Jayden Smith
The actual clothes portion of Jayden Smith’s outfit was a tame suit from Louis Vuitton. The true visual interest, however, laid on his head. He wore a headpiece, literally designed in a house structure. It was created by Dora Abodi, a Transylvainian designer according to the New York Times.
Most sticking-to-a-theme-Taylor Swift
Swifties are known for over-analyzing everything Swift’s every move, but she gave them refreshingly little to work with here. Swift began her head-to-toe red look with her signature red lip and cat eye and continued it with a mini Vivienne Westwood dress and red sandal heels. However, the devil is in the details, with the “T” chain on her thigh completing the look.
Most Gothic-Lady Gaga
Weird Gaga is back! Lady Gaga’s Vivienne Westwood brought some much-needed dark volume and drama to the Grammys. The upturned shoulder pads, nipped waist and huge skirt evoked a (high-fashion!) Victorian mourning dress. She accessorized with a Cartier pendant, which has never been worn to a public event, according to Town and Country..
Most brand loyalty-Doechii
The winner of this year’s Best Rap Album , Doechii, did it in style, with (to my count) 5 total outfit changes between the ceremony, performance and awards shot. And she did it only with Thom Browne, a designer known for whimsical designs. Of course, she also wore her signature face tape, according to People.
