It’s March and some of you know what that means, it is Filmfest season! You have until Saturday, March 29th at 11:59pm to enter this film competition. Go to bit.ly/ASFF2025 to enter. There are 13 categories: Drama, Comedy, Music, Documentary, Broadcast: News, Broadcast: Sports, Experimental, Horror, Sci Fi, Animation, PSA, YouTube/Content Creation, and 13th Category (anything can be submitted to the 13th category).
Last year was my first year participating in Arlington Student Filmfest, and unfortunately, my submission didn’t win. The submission was a music video for a song by the band I was in. The song was called Green Onion and the video was just me and my friends messing around and lip-syncing in front of the camera. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one to submit a video to the filmfest, so I’d like to highlight my favorite videos from last year’s festival.
One film that didn’t win in its category was Keys by Silas Jones. It is an almost silent film from the Horror category with superb cinematography. Within 4 minutes, a seemingly straightforward serial killer premise takes some wild turns. I recommend this film to most people as it could generally be tolerated by the faint of heart.
A film in the Journalism category that I loved was the Green Valley BBQ Truck. It not only talks about a barbeque place that I still have yet to try out (I reeeally need to), but it also tells the story of Antone Jacobs. It really focuses on the community aspects of the neighborhood of Green Valley. I will let the film speak for itself, but in a quick summary, the film is wholesome.
Despite being 30 seconds long, Zakaria Naamane’s clip of the band expiration date is pretty cool. The video consists of a concert in a small art house called rhizome in DC. It’s not a full music video, but if you enjoy live concert footage, check this one out!
These were just three of my favorite films from last year, remember that the deadline for the film fest this year is Saturday, March 29th.
