In Baja California Sur, Mexico, people at Playa El Quemado had a rare encounter with an oarfish, also known as the “doomsday fish”. The fish was moving in shallow water and people were amazed. Despite efforts to guide it back into deeper water, it would swim back every time and one person thought it might be hurt. Oarfish sightings near the surface are rare and usually happen when the fish is sick.
In legends, oarfish are linked to earthquakes, like in Japan in 2011 when 20 oarfish appeared before a big quake, or in Los Angeles in 2024 just days before an earthquake. Experts think their stranding is caused by ocean changes like El Niño or La Niña rather than supernatural events.
Oarfish can grow up to 30 feet long and are still mysterious and cool creatures. While myths surround their appearances, scientists see them as signs of environmental changes.
