Back in April, during the 2024 NFL draft, six teams spent their prized first round pick on a quarterback. The Bears took Caleb Williams, the Commanders took Jayden Daniels, the Patriots took Drake Maye, the Falcons took Michael Penix jr., the Vikings took J.J. McCarthy, and the Broncos took Bo Nix. Even though there were six first round quarterbacks, come week one only three were their team’s starters, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Bo Nix. Let’s see how they’re doing.
Caleb Williams – 1st overall pick
Coming out of USC the 2022 Heisman trophy winner was the consensus first overall pick. He was amazing in college throwing for over 4500 yards and 40 touchdowns in 2022, and over 3600 yards with 30 touchdowns in 2023. So the pick was a no brainer for the Bears. Even though he seemed like a possible generational talent, he has struggled so far at the NFL level. Through three games Williams has thrown for 630 yards 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions with over half of his yards, and all of his touchdowns coming in the Bears week three loss to the Colts. Williams did however turn the ball over three times in that game. He has now thrown for 630 yards, rushed for 67 yards, thrown for two touchdowns, and has committed five turnovers (four interceptions, one fumble). Despite all of Williams’ struggles he has shown some flashes of greatness, and might just need time to adjust before being a very good quarterback.
Jayden Daniels – 2nd overall pick
Jayden Daniels, another Heisman trophy winner has been by far and away the best out of these three quarterbacks up to this point. His first two weeks were very solid, as he threw for 410 yards with two total touchdowns, both of which rushing, and no interceptions. With a record of one win and one loss. Week three however was where he really broke out, throwing for 254 yards with two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. He did that while completing 91% of his passes which is a single game record for an NFL rookie. The Commanders won that game 38-33 scoring on all of their six possessions with five touchdowns and one field goal. Another big achievement by Jayden Dainels and the Commanders offense is during weeks two and three the Commanders committed zero turnovers and punted zero times. This was the first time this has happened in the Super Bowl era (1967-present). Jayden Daniels’ full stats after the first three weeks are 664 passing yards, 171 rushing yards, five total touchdowns (three rushing two passing), and zero turnovers.
Bo Nix – 12th overall pick
Bo Nix, like Caleb Williams, has had a tough start to his NFL career. Nix however, has shown a little bit more promise than Williams early on. After three weeks Bo Nix’s stats are 600 passing yards, 107 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, four interceptions and zero passing touchdowns. The first two weeks for Nix were very rough as he went 0-2 and threw four interceptions and only one total touchdown, but he had a much better third game. Nix picked up his first career win in his third game against the Buccaneers where he threw for 216 yards, one rushing touchdown and zero turnovers in a game where the Broncos shockingly dismantled the Buccaneers. Bo Nix being older than both Williams and Daniels and having much less hype coming out of the draft is probably on a much shorter leash than the other two. But if he can consistently play how he did against the Buccaneers, he should be a very solid NFL quarterback.
Time will tell if these rookies become veterans.
