Warrior Gridiron started off the season a little rough; they now have a five game winning streak going for them. The last two Varsity Football games, against the Edison Eagles on October 9 and Jeb Stuart on October 16, showed the tremendous growth our VFB has made in the last two years.

The Warriors beat Edison 36-18; great performance from all of the running backs are what doubled our score over the Eagles. All of theRBs combined had 384 rushing yards: 121 from sophomore George Brooks, 157 from senior Leon Young, and 109 from sophomore James Clark.

The Warriors jumped out to an early 20-6 halftime lead against Edison from a passing touchdown from Quarterback sophomore Colton Poythress to receiver senior Chris Robertson and two rushing touchdowns. They then kept up that intensity to score 10 more points in the third quarter and cruised on to a 36-18 victory against the Edison Eagles. According to Frank Haddock, Wakefield’s very own statistician, our Warriors picked up their first win against the Edison Eagles at home since November 3, 1995.

The last game Warrior Gridiron played was a thing of beauty. It was against JEB Stuart on a crisp October night. The Warriors beat the Raiders rather handily at 49-0. On the opening drive, the Warriors scored on a 31 yard pass from Poythress to Robertson. After that, Young scored twice in the first quarter and two more times in the second quarter. That included an impressive 84 yard rushing touchdown; he outran the entire defensive line from JEB to reach the end zone. Young said, “It was a good team effort and execution and that what happens when a team communicates with each other.” With 38 seconds left to go in the first half, Poythress threw a 38 yard touchdown pass to Robertson to give Wakefield a 42-0 lead.

In the second half, the Warriors continued to play amazing defense holding JEB to zero points. In the fourth quarter, Clark scored a touchdown from the two yard line giving the Warriors a 49-0 lead that would hold up to be the final score of the game. #shutout
