Last Friday, the Wakefield Warriors Varsity Football Team competed against Eastern High School in a tough game. Wakefield had just come from a devastating loss against Yorktown and needed to prove their abilities on the home field. Both teams had strong moments, but at the end of the night, the Warriors came out on top with a final score of 26-12.

After starting Quarterback Colton Poythress went down last week his younger brother sophomore Cason Poythress and junior Rodney Lee are splitting time in the quarterback position. Cason Poythress said, “its going to take some time getting up to speed playing Varsity, but I think I will be ready for what comes at me.”

The game started off very even as both teams had the ball multiple times in the first quarter but neither team could score points on offense. This 0-0 tie would be broken when sophomore Isaiah Mefford blocked Eastern’s punt and recovered it for a touchdown to put the Warriors up 6-0. In the second quarter Eastern answered with a touchdown of their own to tie it, but in the closing minuets of the first half the Warriors scored once more on a 2 yard rush by quarterback Rodney Lee to give them the lead at halftime, 13-6.

The other new quarterback in the mix Rodney Lee said, “I’ve got to step up and help the team out by filling in as Quarterback.” The team will heavily rely on these two players as they have to step up and learn the position and lead the team.

Eastern scored very quickly to start the second half but a failed two point conversion left the Warriors up 13-12. The Warriors continued to control the game as they put up a long drive and ended up scoring another touchdown on another Rodney Lee rushing score (his second of the game). A big part of the Warriors’ win was their defense as they held Eastern scoreless for the reminder of the game and even the defense scored as Lamont McDowell recovered a fumble and ran it back for a touchdown in the closing seconds of the game to put it away, 26-12.

The Warriors play Mount Vernon this Friday @ Mount Vernon, and home the week after that, come out and support the team!
