Golf is More Complicated Than You Think

We sat down with senior Tony Rodriguez-Cossio, Wakefield Golfer and number 2 on Varsity Golf here at Wakefield. He starts the conversation with, “Golf is More Complicated Than You Think.” When we spoke, the team had recently lost the Arlington Championship, had to hand over the trophy, and get ready for Districts on September 21st and 22nd.

I can’t wake up tomorrow and be Tiger Woods. That would be cool, but that is not the point. It is the journey that is the point and the many memories I make along the way.

— Tony Rodriguez-Cossio

He said, “We won the Arlington Championship trophy last year. We won by one point vs. Yorktown. Very Competitive. This year, we lost the trophy to Yorktown. My hope for next year is…I hope they learn from the expereices we had at the championship this year to improve. I won’t be here, but they will. I want them to beat their scores from this year, and take back the trophy.”

Tony was the person who handed the trophy to Yorktown after the Championship was over. He said it was tough but that he knew it wasn’t the end for the team. “Coach Knorr has a way of teaching that feels personal, and doesn’t add pressure. He says ‘If it works, it works.’ Some people don’t golf the way that others do…so he helped me improve my game by not changing what I do…only improving it.”

Tony (on the left) said of the picture, “There are so many people on the team this year. 26 people! Last year we barely had enough people for a team. This year we have so many people, and they want to be there. It makes me happy for the future.” -Photo by klblair at flickr.com

Tony has been on the team for his entire high school career. What has Golf taught him? “Golf has taught me to be patient. Even when I don’t think I am improving, over time, I do. I appreciate that journey. I can’t wake up tomorrow and be Tiger Woods. That would be cool, but that is not the point. It is the journey that is the point and the many memories I make along the way.”

What is it like being on the team? “People can’t go to the games to cheer us on, so we motivate each other, coaches motivate us, and we have to motivate ourselves, too. You have to be optomistic.” There are 2 golf teams, the A team and the B team. The A team has more experience, and the B team is on the course to get experience. What does Tony see for the Golf team in the future? “The B team has a lot of potential. I see them going far next year.”

Tony hopes to do well at Districts and make it even further in his final year on the team; “To end this golf journey, I want to make it to Regionals. That is something special. I have never been to Regionals.”
