The months of waiting are finally over, the NBA is back, and it is more exciting than ever! After an exciting NBA Finals and tons of offseason speculation, it is time to see some basketball action. But since we last saw the NBA, what’s changed in the association? Who’s where, and what are the biggest team and player developments?
During the NBA offseason, many big-name players were traded and signed to new teams through free agency. Starting in the Western Conference, Kevin Durant headlined the news as he was sent to the Houston Rockets in a historic seven-team trade. After a few lackluster seasons as a member of the Phoenix Suns, this trade sends Durant to his third team in the last five years. Now joining Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson, this acquisition greatly strengthens the core of this Rockets team. Not too long after the trade, his former teammate on the Suns, Bradley Beal, joined the Los Angeles Clippers alongside Chris Paul and Brook Lopez. Despite now being one of the oldest teams in the league, the Clippers are still looking to contend for a championship, backed by their veteran leadership and with the skills of Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. Their rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, also made a few moves, most importantly, they signed DeAndre Ayton, finally filling in the center position they have been hunting for. After making the surprise trade for Luka Doncic last year, Lebron James and the Lakers now have the pieces they need for a good late-season run.
Heading to the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic shook up their team with a mega trade with the Memphis Grizzlies, as they got sharpshooter Desmond Bane. Pairing him with Paolo Banchero has helped fix one of the biggest weaknesses in the Magic offense, which has been shooting the ball from volume. In a shocking turn of events, the Boston Celtics ended up trading away many of their key players from their 2024 championship team. They sent Jrue Holiday back to the Portland Trailblazers, they sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks, and they let Al Horford sign with the Golden State Warriors. With Jayson Tatum out for the foreseeable future, a lot of pressure has been put on Jaylen Brown’s shoulders as he’s now without his All-Star teammates. One last key pick-up was Myles Turner leaving the Indiana Pacers to join Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. But surprisingly, the Bucks decided to waive Damian Lillard after only two seasons with the team. As a result, Lillard chose to go back to his former team, the Trailblazers, back where his career first began. This has now left Antetokounmpo in a tough situation as he’s now without one of the best shooters in the league, forcing him to do more on both sides of the court.
Across all sports, Achilles tendon and ACL ligament injuries have felt nearly ubiquitous with how frequently they have been appearing in the last few years. Just last year, over 10 players in the association fell victim to these types of injuries, the largest volume of season-ending injuries in a single season in league history. The sheer number is not what’s crazy, but it’s the way they happened. In the span of a single postseason, Damian Lillard, Jayson Tatum, and most notably, Tyrese Haliburton, all tore their Achilles tendons during their playoff runs last year. While we’ve seen late-season Achilles injuries before, such as Kevin Durant in 2019, this amount of firepower going out all at once is unprecedented. Because of these injuries, the Eastern Conference has essentially been left wide open, with 3 of the best players in the league being out. But this is not the full extent of injuries just yet. Kyrie Irving ruptured his ACL in March of this year, and Fred VanVleet tore his ACL weeks before the start of the season. As of now, it’s still unclear whether either of them will make their return this season. Hopefully, we won’t have to see any more injuries this season, but for now, these injuries are sure to shake up the playoff picture this year.
After beating the Indiana Pacers in a tough 7-game series, the Oklahoma City Thunder not only won their first championship in franchise history, but they became the NBA’s eighth straight different champion, something the league has never seen before. The last time a team won back to back titles was back in the 2017-2018 season by the Golden State Warriors. Despite this, don’t be surprised if the Thunder are able to defend their throne this season. Their big three of Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and the MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, have been nearly unstoppable on the court together, beautifully mixing offense and defence. Being one of the youngest teams in the league, it would be a challenge to take them down. But at the same time, there have been contenders rising to take the challenge.
In his third year of his NBA career as a member of the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama has already proven to be one of the best players in the league. What he’s able to do on the court is unmatched by anyone in NBA history. They look to make their first playoff appearance in years. In New York, the Knicks and Jalen Brunson have been balling. Surrounded by his Villanova teammates and Karl-Anthony Towns, the Knicks are aiming to take advantage of a weakened Eastern Conference. Alongside them, Donavan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers look to do the same. In Minnesota, Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves have only been getting better every single year. After losing in back to back Western Conference Finals appearances, they look to break through their struggles and make their first finals appearance in franchise history. Even with all the young talent in the league, don’t forget about Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. The best shooter in league history is not done just yet. With Jimmy Butler III by his side, he looks to make one last push for glory.
With the NBA season officially underway, get ready to see fast-paced and intense action that’ll leave you on the edge of your seat. Along with the highlights, it’ll be interesting to see which storylines will be made this year. Who will be the next breakout star, what teams will make headlines, and who will make history? All of these are still waiting to unfold in what should be an amazing season. The players and fans are ready, but the real question is, are you?
