“And in first place, and your Liberty District Indoor Track Champions, Wakefield High School.” That is what’s been said the past two years at the Liberty District Indoor Track Championship as the Wakefield Track team has put up record breaking numbers in recent years. Led by experienced seniors who have since graduated, this year, to emerge victorious, everyone will have to step up, especially the young talented underclassmen that are newer to the team.
Theo Fussarelli, a Junior who saw massive improvements over the past few seasons said, “I am looking forward to Championship season after a long offseason of hard work.” Theo, a sprinter who trained over the fall Cross Country season for Indoor Track, has been putting in weeks of training consistently in preparation for all his races. Another sprinter who has been putting in tremendous amounts of hard work over the summer is national qualifier Carter Lyons. He said, “During the off season, I tried to workout as much as I could so I could manage injuries as well as my speed improvement. That meant going to the track with my current and former teammates consistently to build my endurance and speed.”
Mid-distance Captain Albert Lutz who ran Cross Country said that, “Bettering my self confidence and discipline at practice is going to help me have a great track season.” Lutz, an 800m specialist has been looking forward to running the 1000m and aims to place at Districts and qualify for the Regional Championship for the first time in his career. Another mid-distance Captain, Eulalia Sarli, who has seen massive success qualifying for multiple state and national championships said, “I’m looking forward to the community and challenges that track presents. Both have been instrumental in making me who I am today, and I can’t wait to grow even more!”
Senior Girls Captain AJ Jordan, running in her third year for the Wakefield Track team said, “My biggest goal for this season is to qualify for states in the 500m. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time but after last year’s setback season, I’ve been more motivated and I’ve been taking my training more seriously and am confident in my abilities to qualify for the State Championships.”
As a four year Track Veteran, having recent success in this past Cross Country Season has motivated me to push even harder to try and qualify for the State Championship in the 3200m. Also, as back-to-back District Champions, I want to defend our title and threepeat the Liberty District Indoor Track Championship.
Our first big meet is on December 30th at the Holiday Invitational at the PG County Sportsplex. Let’s go Warriors!
