The current civil war in Sudan is one of the deadliest conflicts in the world right now. This current war in Sudan started in April of 2023; the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have been in a civil war that has made life unsafe for families all over the country. According to aljazeera.com, “nearly three years of war have displaced 14 million people and pushed 21 million into acute hunger.”
When the fighting began, it quickly spread to cities and towns across Sudan. People had to leave their homes and look for safety wherever they could. As of April 2025, nearly 13 million people have been forced to flee their homes either inside Sudan or into neighboring countries like Egypt and South Sudan, which is the largest displacement crisis in the world.
Because of the war, basic things that people need like food, clean water, medicine, and schools are gone. Hospitals have stopped working, and millions of people are facing food shortages that are so bad that famine has been officially declared in some areas. According to worldvision.com, “Sudan’s food security situation is among the worst in the world. Famine conditions have been confirmed in certain areas, including North Darfur’s Zamzam camp, south of El Fasher, where ongoing fighting has intensified.”
What makes this even more devastating is how it affects children. Many kids cannot go to school because schools are closed or unsafe, and many families cannot feed their children because of food scaricity. Even diseases like cholera are spreading because the health care system has been destroyed.
The crisis in Sudan shows how much violence and fighting can damage a whole country and real people’s lives. It’s confusing and scary for the people there, and it’s important that we learn more about it so we can help however we can from this side of the world.
