The NBA trade deadline is always one of the most exciting and craziest weeks of the whole season. At any moment, a blockbuster trade can emerge and change the landscape of the whole league. But now that the deadline has come and gone, here are the biggest moves and storylines that happened around the NBA.
Surprisingly, one of the trade season’s biggest headlines wasn’t even a blockbuster signing; instead, it was a complicated and drawn-out trade rumor.
In the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, it was reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks were going to part ways. Prior to the start of the season, the 2x MVP expressed his desire to compete for another title, and while Antetokounmpo never officially submitted a trade request, it was apparent that he wasn’t satisfied with the current roster.
Immediately, the Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors emerged as major frontrunners in the sweepstakes. For a while, it looked like one of these teams would get the deal done, but at the end of the day, the saga ended with no trade. But for one of the most loyal players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo is still very happy to be in Milwaukee, the city he has called home since 2013. While nothing has happened for now, it is still very possible to see some big news coming this offseason, but only time will tell.
Now, the biggest move of the trade deadline was the Dallas Mavericks sending Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards for Khris Middleton.
Despite how shocking this was, it was not the first time Davis had been involved in a blockbuster trade, as last year the Los Angeles Lakers traded him for Luka Doncic at the deadline in one of the most surprising moves in NBA history. The Mavericks intended for this trade to help them build another championship-contending roster around Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson. But after a plethora of injuries and sudden trades, it looks like the experiment is over, and they are now looking towards the future.
Trading Davis did a few important things for the Mavericks: it gave them veteran players, such as Middleton, it freed up a ton of valuable roster cap space, and most importantly, it gave them five future draft picks. All of these moves will help the Mavericks build around Cooper Flag, who’s been one of the best rookies in the league. The future has arrived for the Mavericks. Now it comes down to whether they can manage it well.
For the Wizards, the years of tanking might finally be coming to a close next season. After trading Bradley Beal in 2023, Washington decided to hit the reset button on their roster and rebuild it from scratch. Since then, they have been among the worst teams in the league, gambling on draft lottery odds. In the past few years, they have drafted some promising players, such as Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr. But their roster still lacked veteran leadership. That all changed this January as they traded with the Atlanta Hawks for Trae Young, whose playmaking and shooting skills have been something their team has desperately needed. Despite just making a big move for a star, they are now pairing Young up with Davis, who is a great rim protector and scorer in his own right. Together, they can make the Wizards a formidable team in the Eastern Conference if they can stay healthy.
Another big move was the Los Angeles Clippers trading James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Darius Garland.
In his time with the Clippers, James Harden has revitalized his offense, turning back the clock and playing some of the best seasons in the latter half of his career. Despite this, LA started the season poorly, jumping to an early losing streak. But just when they started finding a good rhythm, Harden made a trade request near the deadline. After failing to find success in recent years, he wanted to join a championship-contending roster. A few days later, they made a trade with the Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers have suddenly crashed back down to Earth after having the second-best record in the NBA last year, including their 15-game win streak to start last season. Despite being a relatively young team, Cleveland has struggled with injuries all year, specifically to Evan Mobley and Darius Garland. These setbacks have forced Donavan Mitchell to carry most of the load so far this season, but it was clear he needed help on the offensive end of the court. Now with this trade for Harden, it should take some of the weight off his shoulders as the Cavaliers now have another great scorer, which should help them make a push for a top seed in the conference.
For the Clippers, they entered the season as the oldest team in the league, so signing younger players was a must, especially if they are still planning on building around Kawhi Leonard in the years they have left on his contract. Acquiring Garland could prove to be a great move if he can get healthy in time for a late playoff push, but nothing is guaranteed. Another trade LA made was sending Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers for Bennedict Mathurin, who has been playing great off the bench so far. With these trades, the Clippers might have a brighter future than they had at the start of the season.
One final move this trade deadline was the Memphis Grizzlies trading Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz for a pool of picks and players.
For the last few years, these two teams have been among the bottom teams in the Western Conference. Coming out of the offseason and into the trade deadline, it was speculated that both teams would trade their stars and hit the reset button, but with this sudden trade, it seems like only one of them is leaning towards a rebuild.
The Grizzlies have struggled to stay relevant in a loaded conference. While they do have Ja Morant, he has been largely limited due to injuries and suspensions. As Memphis got closer to the deadline, rumors surfaced that it would trade its star guard to another team, signaling a major reset. Instead, they made a move that sent Jaren Jackson Jr. away. In return, they received three future picks and Walter Clayton Jr., among other young players. If they still end up trading Morant in the offseason, we could see a full change of scenery on the Grizzlies’ roster.
On the other hand, the Jazz believe they now have the pieces to create a winning team. Despite talks about blowing up their roster for the last few seasons, they have managed to keep many of their key players in Utah, such as Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen. With the addition of Jackson Jr., it does help bolster their defence and outside shooting. Whether or not they can become a real playoff contender next season is up for debate, but for the Jazz, they believe their time is now.
There you have it, those were all the biggest stories of this year’s NBA trade deadline. Over the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see how many of these moves will play out. Which teams will be better or worse? How will these trades affect the league going into the next season? What trades will we see this offseason? Only time will tell, but for now, let’s enjoy it while it lasts.
